Tubing down the Mohican State Scenic River in Ashland County

If you’ve never been to the Mohican region of Ohio, it’s got a lot going on! Its a mecca for outdoor recreation and scenic views. Just driving through the area, you’ll encounter a variety of campgrounds, cabins, and liveries. And not far from the recently visited Malabar Farm lies Mohican State Park.

Our first stop at Mohican State Park was the lodge where we put up our feet and took in the views. We had lunch at their restaurant, Bromfield’s Dining Room, that overlooked Pleasant Hill Lake. Which at the time of our visit, had a huge water obstacle course in view! How fun! We ordered some DENSE and delicious lunches. To be fair, the raccoon from the night before at Mt. Gilead stole the food we packed and we were hungry. You’d think we were carb loading for a grueling hike, but nope! Our next excursion was a lazy float down the Mohican State Scenic River just beyond the historic covered bridge. The water was not at all warm but the sun was shining so we had a blast. The whole river scene was a complete vibe. It could have been because lining the river were bustling campgrounds, families picnicking, and hikers trekking by. Everyone seemed to be out enjoying themselves. This was my first time tubing down a river and besides running into low hanging branches full of spider webs it was pretty fun! But I think I prefer kayaking… need to feel in control, ya know?

We wrapped up this trip with a bit of birdwatching, of course! And caught a glimpse of some osprey chasing each other through the air. Always a treat to see the water-loving raptors in their element! We can’t wait to go back to Mohican State Park to hike some trails, check out the waterfall, and see the new visitor center is opening this fall!
